[Photo/IC] HONG KONG - The world's eldest giant panda in captivity Jia Jia was given euthanasia on Sunday at Hong Kong Ocean Park, after her health condition deteriorated rapidly in the past two weeks. Died at the age of 38, about 114 years old in human terms, the female panda had lost sharply her food consumption from more than 10 kg to less than 3 kg per day, according to a spokeswoman from the theme park. Jia Jia had spent less time awake and shown no interest in food or fluids for the past few days. The panda's condition worsened on Sunday morning when she was unable to walk and spent the day lying down. To prevent suffering, veterinarians from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government and the Ocean Park agreed to put her to sleep. Leo Kung Lin-cheng, Ocean Park's chairman, said Jia Jia was a member of their family who had spent 17 wonderful years with Hong Kong people, and she will be deeply missed. He also thanked the panda for the wonderful things she had brought to Hong Kong people and visitors from around the world. A spokesman with the Hong Kong SAR government said that it was saddened by the panda's death and expressed appreciation to the theme park for its care for Jia Jia and the support of the giant panda breeding center at Wolong nature reserve in Sichuan. Jia Jia was born in Southwest China's Sichuan province in 1978 and was presented together with male panda An An by China's central government to the Hong Kong SAR as a gift in 1999. Jia Jia was the eldest giant panda ever in captivity and had set world record for longevity. Jia Jia had given births to six panda cubs.

Typhoon Haima puts Hong Kong to halt

HONG KONG - As typhoon Haima edges closer to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory issued the No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal at 6.10 a.m. HKT on Friday, bringing transport and public services to a standstill. It is the first time Hong Kong hoisted a typhoon signal no. 8 in October since 1995, where the region's typhoon season runs mainly in summer. Winds over Hong Kong will turn to the southwest gradually this afternoon and the no. 8 signal is expected to remain in force most of the time during the day, the observatory said in its latest typhoon warning bulletin. The Hong Kong Airport Authority said that a total of 689 passenger flights have been cancelled and delayed as at 6.30 a.m. Local airline Cathay Pacific said in a statement that Haima will be causing significant disruptions for flights to and from Hong Kong from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. today. Happy event'turns to sadness

Ying Ying, Ocean Park's 10-year-old female giant panda, has suffered a miscarriage, the park's management announced on Wednesday. The arrival of the city's first baby giant panda had been eagerly anticipated, as a "happy event" turned to sadness for staff at Ocean Park and many who had followed the story. Following a routine fetal scan Wednesday morning, Ocean Park veterinarian Lee Foo-khong found that the fetus had stopped developing, and that no heartbeat was detected. "There is every likelihood the fetus was consumed by the mother's body. Miscarriage, fetal death and difficult labor are not rare in giant pandas," explains Wang Chengdong, a veterinarian from the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center. Wang added that Ying Ying was especially prone, since this was her first pregnancy. The cause of the miscarriage at this point has not been determined. The panda's short breeding season is another complicating factor. With female pandas able to conceive only two or three days a year, the reproduction rate is very low. Ying Ying was temporarily relocated to Sichuan province last February, to mate with two male pandas. She also underwent artificial insemination to increase chances of a pregnancy. Veterinarians at Ocean Park had called in two panda maternity specialists from Sichuan to provide pre-natal and post-natal support for Ying Ying, said Howard Chuk, senior curator of Terrestrial Life Sciences at Ocean Park. The preparations had been elaborate, including a refurbished nursery. Local specialists had been posted temporarily to the Chinese mainland to learn from experts how to care for the cub when it was born. Ying Ying arrived at Ocean Park in April 2007, together with male panda Le Le. The pandas were gifts from the central government marking the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland on July 1. Since then, Ying Ying has been a particular crowd pleaser at the theme park. Pictures of her tucking in a giant birthday cake were shared and re-shared online, which only increased her popularity.
