Wudang kung fu

WUDANG kung fu is one of the two most representative styles of traditional Chinese martial arts, the other being Shaolin. It’s a popular saying in China that “In the north, Shaolin kung fu is king; yet in the south, Wudang kung fu rules.” Unlike its northern counterpart, which is known for its “external” form of martial arts and integration with Zen Buddhism, Wudang kung fu is an “internal” martial art based on the philosophy and canons of Taoism, an indigenous Chinese religion.

For example, many martial artists believe that Xingyiquan or Shape-Will Boxing, the oldest of thee Wudang internal martial arts, was created in imitation of the fighting techniques and spirit of 12 animals, including the five animals of Hua’s Frolics.

Wudang Mountain is one of the four famous Taoist mountains in China. According to legend, the great Emperor Zhenwu cultivated himself and became a real Taoist master, hence the saying of "It is only emperor Zhenwu who really deserves it", after which "Wudang (meaning the same as the saying in Chinese) Mountain" is named.
