I was nominated as one of the participants in a design competition for a museum to be built in Tianjin, China. However, I was dumbfounded when I received the competition brief. There seemed to be a complete absence of program to guide the design. That is to say, there was nothing about the content and quantity of the collection, or the management systems, or the scale and budget for the museum. Moreover, the strangest thing was that the site had not even been decided. Though not so surprising given the circumstances in China, I was utterly astonished by the single sentence that gave the only design requirement. This is what it said: “The architecture must embody the dignity of Tianjin, China.” While being at a loss, I was greatly influenced by this sentence. Thinking about it, this was a greater boon than any architect deserves. So I set my imagination on the wing. The secret is that a single bird flying through the polluted air of the dark grey sky above the site provided me with that wing. The moment I saw that swan-like bird, the architecture was instantly born. Probably before or since, I have never worked like this as an architect. I submitted my design proposal with the name “Swanium.” Incidentally, in their official announcement, the competition jury made only a single comment: “Too beautiful.” Location Floor Site area Building area Total area Completion Date : Tianjin CHINA : 3F : 50,200m2 : 18,667m2 : 33,949m2 : 2004
