3A Grade Hospital

Chinese hospitals: Making the right choice
Most Chinese cities have multiple state-run hospitals offering varying degrees of specialization and quality of service. Some are better prepared for dealing with international patients. Some are relatively clean, while some are – to put it politely – a hygiene black hole. To make an informed choice, here’s a primer on how local hospitals are graded, and what you should consider in making your choice. If you want to consider the differences between Chinese and international hospitals, see this page. Hospital tiers Hospitals in China are designated as Primary, Secondary or Tertiary institutions, according to a three-tier system assessing a hospital’s ability to provide medical care and medical education, and to conduct medical research. Primary hospital (Tier 1): Typically a small hospital containing less than 100 beds, serving a small town. Provides preventive care, basic healthcare and rehabilitation services. Secondary hospital (Tier 2): Serves a medium-size city, county or district, contains up to 500 beds. These provide comprehensive health services, as well as offering medical education and conducting research on a regional basis. Tertiary hospital (Tier 3): A general hospital, typically in a large city, with over 500 beds. Provides specialist health services, takes a leading role in medical education and scientific research, and serves as a medical hub providing care to multiple regions. Hospital grades Hospitals in each of these tiers are subdivided into another three levels based on quality of service provision, equipment and staff. These are A (甲, jiǎ), , B(乙, yǐ), and C (丙, bǐng). Within this classification, a hospital designated “3A” offers the highest range and degree of care available, while a hospital designated “1C” offers the most basic care. One further designation – “3AAA” (or “三级特等”) – is reserved for the most specialized hospitals. Making the right choice First, don’t wait to get sick – prepare for the unexpected and know your options in advance. Stick to “3A” hospitals as much as possible. Obviously, this may not be an option if you are in a more rural part of China, but you should still seek the best – and cleanest – medical facility available in your area. If you have health insurance – and it’s a good idea to get some, if your work doesn’t already provide it as a benefit - places any limitations on which hospitals you can use. Find out what the nearest “3A” hospitals to your home, office or school are. Run the names of these hospitals by Chinese friends or colleagues – as always, seeking recommendations from locals is a good idea. In big cities, hospitals often specialize in one area of medicine. If you have a general idea of what type of ailment you are suffering from, find out if there is a hospital nearby specializes in that field. The lists below feature recommendations for the top hospitals nationwide across a number of fields. Once you have an idea of which hospital(s) you wish to use, make sure you have the name and contact information, in your own language and in Chinese characters, for that hospital written down or stored somewhere you (or somebody else) can easily access. Hospitals in China We don’t offer the following list as an endorsement of any of the hospitals mentioned, but it is a translation of a post from Renren.com featuring a series of “Top 10” lists of state-run hospitals across China, covering a number of medical fields. These will at least give you an idea of the specialization that exists, and give you some names to check out. As ever, though, you should do your own research to see what best suits your needs and preferences.
Yantian Village: attracting and retaining migrant workers
By Lu Na "I've been working here for seven years and I've adapted to everything here," said Rong Chenlu, who was born in 1991 and now is a receptionist of Dongguan Shinano Motor Co., Ltd. "I've married for two years. My husband works in the same company and we've purchased a house here." Rong talked about her happy life in Yantian Village. Yantian Village is one of the most developed villages in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. Located between Dongguan City and Shenzhen City, the village has a great location and amazing climate. She is one of the 130,000 migrant workers in Yantian, one of the richest villages in Fenggang Town, Dongguan City of Guangdong Province. Yantian has a good name for migrant workers – "Xinguan People" – which means New Dongguan People. "Although we purchased a house, we have to pay a 4,000 yuan (US$645.2) on mortgage per month, which is a huge burden for us," she said. "I earn more than 3,000 yuan (US$483.9) a month. Even if my husband earned much more than me, it would still not be easy, and that's why we still don't have children." Her life is a microcosm for the experiences of the Xinguan People. I've interviewed many workers in the village. They mentioned strong attractions of the village such as the fact that it has more employment opportunities than their hometown and fair in competition, great insurance, high-quality education and healthcare. In fact, Yantian Village indeed offers them more chances and more insurance. Many big companies offer social insurance and housing fund and great welfare such as offering a health check once a year, apart from paying a relatively high salary. Yantian Village has three big hospitals including a private hospital: Guangji Hospital. Guangji Hospital, which was built to meet the standard of a 3A grade hospital (the top standard for Chinese hospitals), features superb medical apparatus and instruments and practised doctors from famous hospitals around China. Great health insurance guarantees workers enjoy cheap medicines and superb medical condition. In order to retain high-quality technical personnel, Yantian tries its best to perfect the public facilities as well as improve their living standard. "We have two high-quality public primary schools and are open to the migrant workers," Deng Manchang, director of the village committee, said. "It still can't meet the requirements. We will try our best to build more schools." As the village is close to Shenzhen, the living expenses are very high. Deng said that the village will decrease the living expenses to give the workers better lives. Built in 1932, Yantian Primary School, one of the two public primary schools in Yantian Village, has opened only for the children of people from Xinguan since 2008. It now has 1,385 students and all of them are from Xinguan. The president of the school said it is the first public school that only accepts migrant workers' children in Dongguan City. Zhentian Primary School, another primary school in Yantian Village, has 1,394 students and 70 percent of them are from Xinguan. "We offer free Children's Palace events for all students apart from those from ordinary classes," Wang Guiqun, president of Zhentian Primary School said. "Every student has at least one extra class such as singing, dancing and playing football and all training is free to every student." Zhentian Primary School features superb teaching facilities such as huge projection in every classroom, professional dance rooms and a plastic gym area. Although migrant workers can enjoy free and quality education at these two schools, the education resources are still far from enough. More importantly, the school enrolls students by accumulating points in many aspects such as the educational background of parents and how long have they worked in Yantian. It turned down many migrant workers who are new to the village or who didn't receive a higher education. "There are six private junior high schools and one public junior high school in Fenggang Town, so the competition is fiercer," the president of Yantian Primary School said, "People from Xinguan send their children to study in the public junior high school and private school if they have good grades or enough money. However, others will send their children back to their hometown." Yang Yulian, a migrant worker in Yantian, has a 12-year-old daughter. "She came here three years ago and is now in the sixth grade at a private school," She said. "We were preparing for her to go to the public junior high school of Fenggang Town and we accumulated a score of 298. However, we are not sure whether she can go to the school or not because it only has 86 spots for migrant workers in Yantian Village." Children who can't go to public schools can either choose go to the six private middle schools in Fenggang or go back to their hometown. New Century School, one of the top private schools in Yantian Village of Fenggang Town, has four divisions including a kindergarten, primary school, and junior and senior high schools. Since 2004, 24 students from the school were matriculated by Tsinghua University and Peking University. It has 3,000 local students and 200 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries. Although private schools in Yantian Village offer amazing facilities and teaching resources, their high tuition fees scare many Xinguan residents away. New Century School is a boarding school and it charges 13,000 yuan (US$2096.9) in tuition fees per semester, which is a large amount for a migrant worker. In addition, lots of people from Xinguan expressed their loneliness and some of them are feeling very homesick. Yantian offers great working opportunities and better education and healthcare insurance. However, it also has high house prices and living expenses, as well as fierce competition for school enrollment. Quoting a sentence said by Deng Manchang, director of the village committee: "Yantian will try its best to attract and retain talents." But in order to retain talents, it still needs to improve in many areas.
