Nanyang Museum of Portrayal in the Han Dynasty
Nanyang Museum of Portrayal in the Han Dynasty, as a professional museum, is China’s first art museum for the special collection, displays and studies of the portrayal and stone carvings in the Han Dynasty as well as China’s largest research center for the portrayal in the Han Dynasty. Undergoing two reconstructions in 1959 and 1976, it has a collection of over 1,500 pieces, including 150 first-class pieces.

With a long history, Wolong boasts abundant tourism resources. Nanyang Wuhou Temple The Nanyang Wuhou Temple Scenic Area, located at the Wolong Hillock, is a famous historical and cultural site, a key site of cultural relics under state-level protection, a national AAAA tourism resort, and one of the top 10 scenic areas in Henan. On the Wolong Hillock stands a temple built in honor of Zhuge Liang, a famous politician and thinker in the Three Kingdoms Period. The layout of the temple keeps the style of the late Ming and early Qing period. The major places of interest include the front gate of the temple, the grand hall with painted clay figures of Zhuge Liang and his son Zhuge Zhan and his grandson Zhuge Shang, the tablet corridor on the front flank of the hall and the stone inscription of Chu Shi Biao (Memorial on Going to War) written by Yue Fei (1103-1142). In the rear part of the temple are such constructions as Zhuge Liang’s Thatched Cottage, Yeyun Nunnery, Gubo Pavilion, Banyue Platform, Ningyuan Tower, etc. There are about 300 stone inscriptions in the temple, of different writing styles, seal script, clerical script, regular script, and cursive script. The representative ones include Han Zhuge Kongming Jiulu Zhidao Beimeng (seal script), Cao Lu Dui (clerical script), Zhuge Zhuan (regular script), Chu Shi Biao (cursive script), which are treasures of calligraphy and carving. Zhang Heng Museum Zhang Heng Museum is a national key unit of cultural relics protection and a national base for adolescent education. It is located in the Xiaoshiqiao village of the Shiqiao Town of Wolong District, about 20 km for the downtown. The major sight spots include the gate tower, exhibition hall, altar, ancient planetarium, bust of Zhang Heng, watchtower of the Han Dynasty, stone tablet wall, tomb, bungalow, turret, simulated earthquake hall, stone inscription corridor, etc. The exhibitions give a vivid display of Zhang Heng’s life, his achievements and contributions, inventions and literary works. The Museum plays an important role in carrying on the cream of Chinese culture, reinforcing the technological awareness, beefing up the national morale, promoting socialist culture and expanding communication and friendship with world peoples. Dushan Scenic Area Dushan Scenic Area is 3 km to the northeast of downtown Nanyang, covering 4 km2. The mountain is round, with elevation of 367.8 m. With Fengzi on the north, Tamo on the west, Baihe River on the east and Wancheng on the south, it is the mountain closest to downtown Nanyang and also a strategic area of Nanyang. Dushan is a sacred place of both Buddhism and Taoism. It has Zushi Palace (Palace for Taoism Patriarch) built in the Ming Dynasty and Yushan Zen Temple built in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Dushan enjoys a long history, picturesque beauty and verdant environment, with Baihe River circling around. It is a must for hikers, sightseers, mountaineers and pilgrims. Today, the Dushan Forest Park with good facilities and beautiful natural environment is most popular among locals, making itself a best place for leisure, sightseeing, holiday going and convalesce. These years, the government of Wolong has invested a lot to facelift the infrastructure in the scenic area and make the place greener and more beautiful. Nanyang Chinese Rose Expo Park Located to the northern suburb of Nanyang city, Nanyang Chinese Rose Expo Park represents one of the top ten Chinese rose parks that gain the highest popularity in Nanyang. As an AAA level tourist spot that faces Nanyang Dushan Forest Park to the west, the expo has the Baihe National Wetland Park to the east and 300 meters away from Dushan Station of highways to the north. The attraction is conveniently located and geographically advantageous with green mountains and clear rivers, hence a renowned flower viewing site. In 1995, Chinese rose was named as the municipal flower by Nanyang government. In 2000, Nanyang was named as the home of Chinese roses by State Forestry Bureau and China Flower Association. As a result, Nanyang becomes China’s largest Chinese rose breeding base. Lanying Reservoir Scenic Spot Located in Jingang Sub-district, 6 kilometers away from the northwest of Nanyang city center, Lanying Reservoir Scenic Spot has a reservoir of 12.46 million cubic meters and a surface area of 1.5 square kilometers with a water level of 144.45 meters. The water zone is broad, clear and environment- friendly. Major scenic area includes recreational park (a fishing pond, an animal park, gym and a small library), water sightseeing area (pleasure-boat zone, fishing platform, large water amusement park, water catering town) and a services zone (holiday hotel, a parking lot, a shopping area and a villa). The reservoir zone and the dam have already embarked on a green project covering an area of 44,000 square meters with 53,000 tourist arrivals each year.

The Nanyang Museum of Han Dynasty Stone Carving is the first museum in China that is specialized in collection, display and research of Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) stone carvings. Situated in Nanyang City suburb in Henan Province, the museum was built in October 1935 and reconstructed twice in 1959 and 1976, respectively. The museum has a collection of over 1,300 stone carvings, of which 150 pieces are of the national first grade. The museum is the art treasury of the Han stone carvings. The most famous stone carvings are Tianlu Bixie (two mythical animals that are supposed to drive away the evils) and Xu Ahqu Tomb Stone Carving of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). The stone carving of Tianlu is 165 centimeters high and 220 centimeters long, while that of Bixie is 165 centimeters high and 225 centimeters long. The Xu Ahqu Tomb Stone Carving of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), 109 centimeters in width and 69 centimeters in hight, is a very rare epitaph in the ancient society.
