 Confucius Institute Scholarship
The Confucius Institute Scholarship is set up by the Confucius Institute to sponsor international students, scholars and Chinese language teachers to study in relevant universities in China. Founded in 2009, it aims to support the Confucius Institute in promoting Chinese language and culture internationally, and to cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and Chinese speaking talents. The scholarship is awarded to non-Chinese citizens only, who should be of good health and between 16 and 35 years old. The scholarship is awarded in different fields of study each year, and the length of sponsorship also varies according to the field of study.

2016 Confucius Institute Scholarship for Students and Teachers of Chinese

2016 Confucius Institute Scholarship The Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky (UKCI) is pleased to announce both short- and long-term Confucius Institute (CI) Scholarships for non-Chinese citizens. The CI Headquarters, also called Hanban and located in Beijing, founded this scholarship to provide funding for students, scholars, and non-native Chinese language teachers worldwide to help them further their studies of Chinese. This scholarship also encourages the building of knowledge and understanding of the Chinese language and culture through support of research related to these topics, and to Chinese history, literature, and philosophy. The following is a list of participating Chinese Host Universities for this scholarship: Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Jilin University, Shandong University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Fudan University, East China Normal University, Sichuan University, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-Sen University, and Beijing Language & Culture University. Short-Term Scholarship Options: The Four-Week Scholarship This category provides a sponsorship for 4-week study which is mainly focusing on Chinese language. Application is mainly open to Confucius Institute (Classroom) students, excellent performers in HSK test, and outstanding club members of Confucius Institute Magazine. Applicant should submit a HSK or BCT score report, and have no prior experience of studying in China “Chinese Bridge” (Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students) Winners who have been awarded the 2016 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” can apply for admission according to the scholarship specified in the certificate. The Scholarship for One Semester This category provides a sponsorship for 5 months. Applicant should have no prior experience of studying in China, but have a minimum score of 120 in HSK Test (Level 2), and a minimum score of 40 in HSKK (Beginner Level). Alternatively, applicant should have a minimum score of 100 in BCT (A), and a minimum score of 120 in BCT (Speaking). The Scholarship for One Academic Year This category provides a sponsorship for 11 months. Application is open to Confucius Institute (Classroom) students, overseas Chinese language teachers, Chinese language major students and excellent performers in HSK test. International students who are now studying in China are not eligible for the scholarship. Applicant should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and 60 in HSKK test (Beginner Level). Alternatively, applicant should hold a minimum score of 180 in BCT (A) , and a minimum score of 180 BCT (Speaking). Long-Term Scholarship Option: The Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Scholarship This category provides a sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicant should own a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 5), and a minimum score of 50 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred. The Scholarship for One Academic Year Study and MTCSOL Students This category provides a sponsorship for 3 academic years. Applicant should provide the employment agreement from a designated Confucius Institute or a prospective working institution. Applicant should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Beginner Level). The Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Students This category provides a sponsorship for 4 academic years. Applicant should hold a high school diploma or above, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and a minimum score of 40 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Scholarship Coverage and Criteria Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition and on-campus accommodation fees, and are provided with a monthly living allowance and comprehensive insurance while studying in China. Monthly living allowances are provided at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month): CNY 2,500 for Bachelor’s Degree students, One Academic Year students, and One Semester students CNY 3,000 for Master’s Degree students Admission Admission for students of MTCSOL, One Academic Year Study and MTCSOL students, BTCSOL students, One Academic Year students, and One Semester students is either on September 1st, 2016 or March 1st, 2017. Four-Week Study courses are available from July 15th – August 14th, 2016, or December 15th, 2016 – January 14th, 2017. Application Process This scholarship is administered by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), which manages the admission process. The UKCI acts as a recommending institute for applicants from the University of Kentucky. Students who select the UKCI as their recommending Confucius Institute must fulfill the following requirements: Register for and take the appropriate HSK and HSKK exams (see above for specific level needed for each scholarship). Click here for more information about the exams. Complete the UKCI application form Submit two letters of recommendation to Lianyun Pang (lianyun.pang@uky.edu). At least one letter of reference must come from your (UK or Confucius Institute) Chinese language instructor. Deadline to submit letters: Friday, May 15, 2016 Once applicants receive an email from the UKCI clearing them to continue in the CI Scholarship application process, they will need to complete the following steps as discussed further on the Hanban CI Scholarship website: Log on to the Hanban CI Scholarship homepage and register for a CI Scholarship ID Applicants will then receive their ID by email and can log in through the Hanban CI Scholarship homepage to begin the application process After logging in using their ID, applicants should read the information provided in each of the tabs at the top of the screen, as well as the information on the Hanban CI Scholarship website regarding the host institutes and majors Applicants then need to complete and submit the CI Scholarship Application Form on the Scholarship website. Applicants from UK will need to be sure and indicate the UKCI as the recommending institute in the online application form. Applicants will also need to attach the electronic files of the following materials to their online application (Deadline to complete and submit the application: June 22, 2016): Photocopy of passport photo page Photocopies of the required HSK, HSKK, or BCT written and oral score reports for the desired scholarship Notarized diploma of highest education level attained (scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status) Reference letter(s) (including the UCKI recommendation letter) and letter of commitment, if necessary, to teach for 5 years following graduation. MTSCOL Scholarship applicants are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English) and a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese and signed). Winners from the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions held in China for college and high school students shall submit the certificate of scholarship. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area. Chinese language teachers shall submit proof of the length of time they have taught and weekly teaching hours provided by the institutes they work for. Other materials required by the applicants’ selected Chinese Host University In addition to submitting the application and required materials online, applicants will also need to submit the application and materials in hard copy as a package to Lianyun Pang at the UKCI, which is located on the first floor office 113 of Bradley Hall. Application Review Process 1. The UKCI will examine all application materials for each CI Scholarship applicant and submit a list of recommended applicants to Hanban by July 1st, 2016. 2. Chinese host institutes will also review applications and submit a proposed enrollment list of qualified candidates to Hanban by July 15th, 2016. 3. Hanban will then organize an expert panel to make the final selections and publish the list of successful applicants on the Scholarship website by July 29th, 2016. 4. Hanban will also inform the host institutes and the UKCI of those accepted, and we as the recommending institute will then inform the applicants. 5. The Chinese host institutes will post an admission letter, enrollment instructions, the “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form) and other related materials to successful applicants through their recommending institutions (the UKCI for UK students).

Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS)

Confucius Institute Scholarship program is established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) to provide scholarships to international students and scholars. Under this program, Master Degree Students and General Visiting Students are accepted by Peking University. Eligibility: The scholarship is oriented at outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), overseas local Chinese language teachers, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, excellent foreign college students majored in Chinese, and those who intend to become Chinese teachers. 1、Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 16 and 35. 2、Scholarship for One-Academic Year Students: Applicants should achieve a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level). Scholarship for One-Semester Students: Applicants should achieve a score of at least 120 on the HSK (level 2) and at least 40 on the HSKK (primary level). Categories of Scholarships 1.Scholarship for 1 semester/1-academic-year Chinese language study 2.Scholarship for a 2-year full time master’s program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Scholarship recipients must complete their study within due time; Scholarships invariably cannot be extended. Scholarship Coverage & Criteria Scholarship winners are exempt from registration fees, tuition, fees for basic learning materials, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with a one-off resettlement subsidy, monthly allowance, outpatient medical service and comprehensive insurance. *The one-off resettlement subsidy will not be provided to those who have studied in China for more than half a year before being enrolled.

2016 Qingdao University Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Information

I. Category of Scholarship and Eligibility Criteria Being authorized as one of hosting universities of Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS), the 2016 QU CIS category is as follows: -- Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages -- One-Academic-Year Students -- One-Semester Students Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 16 and 35 (Chinese language teachers in post shall be aged below 45, and applicants for BTCSOL scholarship should be aged below 20). 1. Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages The scholarship winner shall begin the study in autumn 2016 and the duration of scholarship is two academic years. The applicant should have a bachelor degree or its equivalent, get a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level). The applicant with a specific teaching post arranged will be given prior admission (certification by the institution he/she will teach for is required). Scholar winner who passes the annual assessment with the score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 6) and the score of at least 70 on the HSKK (intermediate level) by the first-academic-year after admission, is qualified for continuing the scholarship. 2.Scholarship for One-Academic Year Students The scholarship is oriented at outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), overseas local Chinese language teachers, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, excellent foreign college students majored in Chinese, outstanding performers on the HSK, and those who intend to become Chinese teachers. The time of entrance is autumn 2016 and spring 2017,the grant term is 11 months with the training target for HSK level 5 and HSKK intermediate level. Applicants should achieve a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level), or at least 180 on the BCT (A) and at least 180 on the BCT (spoken Chinese). 3.Scholarship for One-Semester Students The applicants cannot have study experience in China. The time of entrance is Fall 2016 or spring 2017, and the grant term is one semester (5 months) with the training target for HSK level 4 and HSKK intermediate level. Applicants should achieve a score of at least 120 on the HSK (level 2) and at least 40 on the HSKK (primary level), or at least 100 on the BCT (A) and at least 120 on the BCT (spoken Chinese). II. Scholarship Coverage and Criteria Scholarship winners are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with monthly living allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. Monthly living allowances are provided at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month): a. CNY 2,500 for One-Academic-Year Students and One-Semester Students. b. CNY 3,000 for Master’s Degree Students. III. Recruitment Procedures 1. From the issue date of the Procedures, applicants can log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information and introduction of host institutes and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form online. The application deadline of Spring is May 10,2016.The application deadline of Autumn is Nov 18,2016. 2. Confucius Institutes (independently set-up Confucius Classrooms), overseas Chinese test centers, educational and cultural offices (sections) of Chinese Embassies (Consulates), host institutes and institutions of higher education in those countries with no Confucius Institutes are entrusted by Hanban as the recommending institutions. The recommending institutions shall examine the qualification and application materials of applicants, and submit the list of recommended applicants to Hanban within 10 working days after the application deadline. 3. Host institutes are responsible for reviewing the qualification of applicants and submitting the proposed enrollment name list of qualified candidates to Hanban within 10 working days. 4. Hanban will organize an expert panel to make the final selection, and publish the name list of successful applicants on the Scholarship website after 45 working days. Hanban will also inform the host institutes and the recommending institutions, and the recommending institutions will inform the applicants. 5. After confirming the intention of studying abroad with successful applicants.Qingdao University will post “Admission Notice”, “Enrollment Instructions”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China" (JW202 Form) and other related materials to successful applicants through their recommending institutions within 15 working days. IV. Application Documents Applicants should log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials: 1. Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form 2. Photocopy of passport photo page 3. Photocopies of HSK、HSKK or BCT、BCT(O) score reports. 4. Application Statement: stating applicant's Chinese language learning background, study plan and aim in China It shall be written in Chinese and no less than 800 words. 5. Resume (Please download the Resume template from the Qingdao University International Students website: http://www.international.qdu.edu.cn/Info/?id=42 6. Notarized highest education diploma attained(scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status, in Chinese or English). 7. Reference letter. The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). 8. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China. 9. Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall submit the certificate of scholarship. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area. 10. Chinese language teachers shall submit the proof of the length of time in teaching and weekly teaching hours provided by institutes they work for. V. Matters Needing Attention 1. If the name on application is inconsistent with the name on the attached passport scanning file, or relevant certification material is incomplete, the application will be invalid. 2. If the scholarship winner cannot register for certain reason, he/she shall inform the host institute 15 days prior the registration day with a written explanation. Those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship qualification will not be remained and no longer have the qualification of applying the scholarship. 3. Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination. 4. Students for a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) shall be subject to an annual appraisal organized by the host institutes in the second semester after being enrolled according to the “Annual Appraisal Procedures for Confucius Institute Scholarship”. Only the eligible students are entitled to continue to receive the Scholarships in the following year. Scholarship for one-year and one-semester students will be required to take HSK and HSKK test before graduation.
