CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW IN XIAOLAN
The Chinese obsession with chrysanthemum is taken to new height in Xiaolan, where chrysanthemum show is held annually as a regular autumn event. Known locally as the "Town of Chrysanthemum", Xiaolan boasts almost a whole town of chrysanthemums that dresses up in bold pastels at harvest time. Xiaolan, a prosperous town in Zhongshan, has always been enjoying a reputation for its centuries-long practice of chrysanthemum cultivation. The practice goes far back in time. According to some legend, it is said that during the Xianchun period of Southern Song Dynasty (1265-1274 ), a concubine of the then emperor Song Duzong escaped from the heavily-guarded palace at the risk of her own life, hoping to pursue her own true love. She went all the way south to evade the arrest of soldiers sent by the furious emperor. First she took refugee in Zhuji Alley, Nanxiong County, Guangdong Province where she met a lot of business people, and politicians who had come from the North and settled there so as not to get involved in the war taking place in the North. The peaceful life was soon disrupted by the following guards, so the concubine, together with those friends she newly made, ran further south till they finally arrived in Xiaolan, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City) where they managed to get rid of the following guards. The county was scattered with countless juicy yellow chrysanthemum flowers and they fell in love with the beautiful land at first sight and they all agreed to take residence here. Since then, they worked hard and happily in this Chrysanthemum Land; they have not only preserved local people's practice of chrysanthemum cultivation, but also developing it into art. From October to November every year in fall, the splendid chrysanthemum show is held along the major streets, and in the parks. The show, featuring about 100, 000 pots of over thousand varieties, is unequaled by any ever made in this country and thousands of visitors makes it as one of Zhongshan's top ten attractions undoubtedly Every 60 years, a grand chrysanthemum exhibition will be held in Xiaolan. The Xiaolan chrysanthemum show never fails to come up with some innovative ideas about design every year and has earned itself a place in the Guinness Book of Records. However, the show has formed its own traditional style, highlighted by dramatic shapes, vibrant colors, and numerous blossoms. The "thousand bloom" plants, for example, feature hundreds-if not quite thousands-of simultaneous blossoms in massive, domed-shaped arrays, all from a single plant. Another traditional design is disciplined color patterns formed by quantities of chrysanthemum arranged in diagonal lines. A third type is animal-like frameworks covered by small chrysanthemums. Besides the chrysanthemum show, there is a special chrysanthemum banquet, including the renowned chrysanthemum fish meat balls, chrysanthemum cakes, chrysanthemum-brewed wine, meat with chrysanthemum, and other chrysanthemum-related dishes.

Xiaolan, a prosperous town in northern Zhongshan, has always been enjoying a reputation for its 700-year-long practice of chrysanthemum cultivation. Every 60 years, a grand chrysanthemum exhibition is held, which makes Xiaolan boast the “Town of Chrysanthemum” at harvest time. The chrysanthemum show even becomes the platform for people to share experience of planting and appreciating chrysanthemum. The show, featuring about 10, 000 pots of blossoming chrysanthemum, is unequaled by any ever made in this country and many celebrations like folk art performance, dragon dance and lion dance assures it one of Zhongshan’s top ten attractions beyond question. Thousands of visitors dressed up to gather at the ocean of flowers to experience the glamour of the cultural hometown of chrysanthemum.
Chrysanthemum Show to open in Zhongshan
The annual Xiaolan Chrysanthemum Show is scheduled to open on November 23, 2010 in Xiaolan Town, Zhongshan City. Xiaolan Chrysanthemum Show can date back to Ming Dynasty and it was as of the Qing Dynasty in Jiaqing Period that it became a routine to hold the chrysanthemum show annually, a middle-scale one every 10 years and a large-scale one every 60 years. During the past 200 years, the practice has never been interrupted. With the good tradition and a solid foundation, Xiaolan Chrysanthemum Show has been listed in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006. - Zhongshan Municipal Government
