Sodagreen top winner at Golden Melody Awards
CNA June 27, 2016, 12:19 am TWN TAIPEI -- Taiwanese pop music band Sodagreen's (蘇打綠) album "Winter Endless" (冬未了) emerged as the biggest winner of Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards Saturday, bagging five awards including best Mandarin album. "Winter Endless," which entered the competition with a leading eight nominations, also won in the categories of best band, best lyricist, best album producer and best musical arranger. The album, a collaboration between Sodagreen and GermanPops Orchestra, is Sodagreen's 10th studio album and the last of the four concept albums created as part of the band's Project Vivaldi. The project began in 2009 and was inspired by composer Antonio Vivaldi's violin concerti "The Four Seasons." The four albums were recorded and produced in Taiwan's Taitung, London, Beijing and Berlin, respectively. Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin (林俊傑) picked up his second best Mandarin male singer title with his album "From M.E. To Myself" (實驗專輯:和自己對話). Taiwanese singer Julia Peng (彭佳慧) took home her first best Mandarin female singer title with her album "Darling" (大齡女子). Taiwanese singer-songwriter Eli Hsieh (謝震廷) grabbed the best new artist award for "Progress Reports" (查理). Best song of the year went to singer-songwriter Suming Rupi's (舒米恩) "Aka pisawad" (Don't Give Up), which is sung in the indigenous Amis language. The lifetime contribution award was awarded to 64-year-old Taiwanese singer Tracy Huang (黃鶯鶯), who has released more than 50 Mandarin, English and Cantonese albums since the 1970s and is known for her classic songs such as "Crying Sand" and "Sending My Love Across Time and Space." Meanwhile, in addition to celebrating music, some celebrities and artists also used their speeches or performances to call attention to gay, labor, environmental, indigenous and other social issues. The song "Aka pisawad" is dedicated to all indigenous children and farmers, as well as the China Airlines flight attendants who went on a strike to fight for better rights, said singer Ado' Kalitaing Pacidal, who received the best song of the year award on behalf of singer-songwriter Suming Rupi. In his acceptance speech after receiving the best lyricist award, Sodagreen's lead vocalist Wu Tsing-fong (吳青峰) thanked "all those who stood up for their beliefs with a true heart," whether it was speaking for the disadvantaged, fighting for their own rights, or supporting gay marriage, animals or tree rights. "Thank you. You have changed me, so I would like to thank you," Wu said.
