Nine holy lakes in Tibet

"Namtso" means "Heavenly Lake" in Tibetan; in the Mongolian and Manchu languages it is referred to as "Tengri Nor" which has the similar meaning. Loated about 240 kilometers north of Lhasa between Baingoin and Damxung Counties and at an elevation of 4,718 meters, Namsto Lake sits 70 kilometer long, 30 kilometer wide and has an area of 1,940 square kilometers. It is the largest saltwater lake in Tibet, the second-largest saltwater lake in China, and the highest lake in the world. According to legend, Namtso was Indra's daughter and Nyanchen Thanglha's wife. She had one face, three eyes and two hands. In her right hand she held a precious vase and in her left a jeweled mirror. A tight bun sat high upon her head, when let loose her hair streamed down her shoulders and back. She was an enchanting beauty and would ride an azure dragon. "Basum Co Lake" in Tibetan means "Three-Rock Lake", which is also known as "Draksum Tso Lake". It is the holy lake of the Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and is one of the largest freshwater barrier lakes in eastern Tibet. It is located in rural Draksum Tso Township, which is in Tibet's Nyingchi City's Kongpo Gyamda County. Basum Co Lake is surrounded by mountains and has a mild climate. The lake is at an average of 3,538 meters above sea level and 15 kilometer long with an average width of 2.5 kilometer. The lake's deepest point reaches down 166 meters. Tangra Yumco is the largest holy lake of original Tibet's Bon religion, and is the third largest lake in Tibet overall. It is 70 kilometers long, 20 kilometers wide, covering an area of 1,400 square kilometers, and sits more than 4,600 meters above sea level. Tangra Yumco and Dargo Sacred Mountain are located in the wilderness that is well-known as a "no man's land". In the Shuanghu and Ombu areas which take up an area of more than 200,000 square kilometers, there is only one person for every six square kilometers. Legend has it that in ancient times, Dargo the Mountain god went to Tohlung Dechen trying to find good barley seeds. This thus enraged all of the local gods who went in hot pursuit after him. Many hardships fell upon Dargo. Of his stolen barley seeds, he carefully sprinkled the remaining seeds on his wife's side. Tangra Yumco was nourished from her breast milk, and with careful cultivation, the tsampa barley here became the sweetest in Tibet. When Tibetan people in pilgrimage to worship at a holy lake, they never forget to sincerely pray next to the Ghost Lake. The "Ghost Lake" La-nga Tso is very close to the side of the holy lake Mapam Yumco. La-nga Tso Lake is a beautiful blue crescent-shape lake, while Mapam Yumco takes on the shape of the sun. The two lakes are not far from one another and connect by water. The water of the holy lake is pure, cold, sweet and clear. The water of the Ghost Lake on the other hand is bitter and hard to swallow. This demonstrates the state of harmony between the two lakes. Mapam Yumco is nearly 4,500 meters above sea level, 77 meters deep and traces about 90 kilometers along its circumference. "Mapum Yamco" means "Invincible Jake Lake" in Tibetan, with "Mapum" meaning undefeatable. It is the oldest and most sacred lake for Buddhist, Hindu, and Bon religions. Buddhists believe the water is so holy that it can purify a person's heart and soul of troubles or evil spirits. Records in the Tripitaka say that in northern India there is a snow mountain that has four sources of water under its snow. This snow mountain is Mount Kailash. The four water sources come from Mapum Yumco through Tachog Tsangpo River in the East, Macha Khabap River from the South, Langchen Khabap River in the West and Sengye Khabap River in the North. Lhamoi Lhatso Lake's form is like a skull, therefore it is famously referred to by Tibetan Buddhists as the skull of the famous guardian Pelden Lhamo head, and the lake is also the place of her soul, referred as "Drolma Lake". Lhamoi Lhatso Lake is Tibet's holy lake with the most sacred view. When looking for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, it is necessary to go and take in a view from Lhamoi Lhatso Lake in order to receive a sign, such as the view of the landscapes and village houses where the soul boy would be found, or the scene of the boy playing. Ordinary people may see their prelife and after death on the top of mountain. Yardrok Yutso Lake is known for having the most beautiful water in the world. In Tibetan, "Yar" means above, "Drok" is pasture, "Yu" is jade, and "Tso" is Lake. "Above the Pasture of Jade Lake" invokes images of "scattered turquoise goddess earrings" in the minds of Tibetan people. Yardrok Yutso's body winds up through the hills more than 130 kilometers. Despite the fact that its angles do not reveal a whole picture, Yardrok Yutso can only be seen from a very high point or from map. Yardrok Yutso's likeness to earrings can be seen from this vantage point- the lake sits like earrings embedded above the mountain as an ear. The varying rays of sunlight at different times reveal the rich levels of blue, which appear and fade almost like a dream. Legends say a devil called Serling used to live in the forests west of Lhasa in Tohlung Dechen County. Each day he would consume millions of souls until he was found by Padmasambhava on his quest to subdue monsters. Padmasambhava pursued the monster that fled from the forest to a lake south of Changtang. The master decreed that Serling shall never leave this lake and forever devoutly repent. Therefore this lake is named "Serling Tso Lake" means "Serling Devil Lake". Pangong Tso Lake is located in the north of Ngari Prefecture. Although it has no strange or scared religious significance, it is a famous great lake. Its western parts fall within the territory of Kashmir, which is salt water, so there are rarely creatures there as nothing can grow there. Its central and eastern parts that fall in Chinese territory however are fresh water, where fish and plant life are abundant.
