Huangmei Opera
Huangmei Opera is one of the five major operas of China, and the primary opera genre of Anhui Province. It is chanted and sung in the Anqing dialect. Originating from the Tang Dynasty, it features catchy and very expressive tunes. Famous pieces include The Legend of Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy, Female Consort Prince, and Yu Tang Chun. It was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2006.

Singer displays the range of Peking Opera

Brann has two degrees in Chinese theatre and had studied Huangmei Opera, another famous Chinese opera that originated as a form of rural folk song and dance, about two years ago in China. She immediately matched the right characters with their appearances when Huang showed three photos of different characters and asked the audience to guess during the presentation.

Anhui to stage Huangmei and Hui operas in the US

A delegation of performers is set to wow US audiences with a kaleidoscope of Chinese traditional operas like Huangmei opera, Hui opera and Peking opera during the upcoming Lunar New Year. The majority of the cast members are from Anhui Huangmei Opera Theater and Anhui Hui Opera & Peking Opera Theater. The delegation will stage four shows in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Houston and Miami, together with two parties in celebration of Spring Festival with local Chinese communities. The news is making a splash in those cities, especially in Houston, where the mayor has agreed to mark February 15, 2013, as Houston Huangmei Opera and Hui Opera Day.

Enjoy Huangmei Opera at Anqing, Anhui province

Huangmei Opera fans perform “A (Young) Couple Enjoying the Festive Lanterns” on June 22, 2010 at Huangmeige, a theater at the foot of Tianzhu Mountain, located at Anqing, Anhui province. Anqing is the hometown of Huangmei Opera and the birthplace of famous Huangmei Opera artists such as Yan Fengying, Ma Lan and Han Zaifen.
